During the holiday season every table has room for a veggie and dip tray so why not make this easy, festive looking Vegetable and Dip Christmas Tree.  It is definitely a step up from the usual grocery store tray and always draws plenty of compliments.

In this recipe the vegetables lay right on top of the dip so it travels well to a pot luck holiday party. Tell everyone the dip is underneath so they will dig in.

Homemade vs Store Bought Vegetable Dip

Store bought vegetable dips have an ingredient list and they often include artificial flavours, additives and preservatives. I prefer homemade and this simple dip can be used any time of year. The sour cream gives it a tang and the Miracle Whip balances it out. These are both gluten free ingredients that any everyday home cook can find.

If someone asks you about making a gluten free vegetable dip tell them to make this one. Simply give a quick explanation about cross contamination saying that an open jar in most kitchens will be contaminated with bread crumbs from sandwich making. Then give them the solution. When making a gluten free dip starting with a brand new jar is the best way to prevent cross contamination. And it’s easy to do.

Plain sour cream is cream that has been fermented with certain kinds of lactic acid bacteria. This process sours and thickens the cream. Light sour cream sometimes contains maltodextrin as a thickener. 1 cup sour cream
½ cup Miracle Whip
1 Tbsp finely chopped green onion
1 tsp dried dill weed
1 tsp salt
broccoli stem
broccoli florets
cauliflower florets
cherry tomatoes


Cut the broccoli and cauliflower into florets.
Create a tree stump by cutting a piece of the broccoli stem. Cut in half horizontally.
Combine all dip ingredients in a bowl and stir until combined.
Spread dip over the entire tray.
Place the broccoli tree stump at the bottom of the tray.
Using broccoli florets create the bottom of the tree. Place a piece at the top then fill in the sides to create the shape of a tree. Fill in the middle to finish.
Using cauliflower florets fill in around the tree to the edges of the tray.
Decorate the tree with whole or halved cherry tomatoes.
Cover with plastic wrap if not serving right away.
